It is referred to as direct because it is between two devices. Sidelink however, is a direct proximity-based cellular connection. Uplink is the direction of communications from a device to the network core, and downlink is from the network core a device. The satellite transmitter generates a signal that would jam its own receiver if both uplink and downlink shared the same frequency. Uplink and downlink are used in different contexts, but generally mean the same thing. The downlink frequency is one that is used for transmission of signals from the satellite to the earth station receiver. The term uplink indicates transmissions from ground side towards cell tower and downlink indicates transmissions from cell tower towards ground side. Downlink is a telecommunication term pertaining to data which is sent out or downwards from a higher level or portion of a network. In networks based on fixed lines the terms downstream and upstream are used to denote the data flow from the network to the end-user and from the end-user to the network respectively. Therefore, the downloading of images and videos is done through the downlink process. Edge terminals or nodes receive data from the network core or from higher-level network nodes such as routers and servers, and is commonly known as downloading. Forward link A forward link is the link from a fixed location (e.g., a base station) to a mobile user. Uplink definition signal leaving your cellular device and going back to a cell tower. Downlink definition signal coming from a cell tower to your cellular device. This is also known as a downstream connection. Uplink and downlink, also called upload and download, refers to the two-way communication between a cell tower and your phone. The term is used in the same way in computer networking. Pertaining to computer networks, a downlink is a connection from data communications equipment towards data terminal equipment. Earth Station Uplink It is the process in which earth is transmitting the signal to the satellite and satellite is receiving it. In satellite communications, downlink simply refers to the process when a satellite beams down information toward earthbound terminals or devices. It is a telecommunications link for signals coming to the earth from a satellite, spacecraft, or aircraft. Uplink and downlink communication are separated by guard times (period) to avoid overlaps. The downlink is a term used in radio communications and satellite communications to denote the link from the network to the end user or from the satellite to the earth. Time Division Duplex or Duplexing (TDD) is a communication technique where uplink (phone to network) and downlink (network to phone) communications are sent on the same frequency band at different time slots.
